How to prepare carrots

An introductory demonstration on an efficient way to prepare your carrots for stir frys and salads.  We are slicing and julienne (matchsticks) our carrots.  From the julienne you can cut one step further to make them diced carrots.

Hi there, Good for you living here with a quick tip on preparing carrots.

In this video we are going to slice our carrots and julienne our carrots efficiently.

So I’ve just peeled a carrot here and using a good knife we are going to cut our carrot as thin as you like at an angle.  The two things to take note of is that I’m using a sawing action, a cut like this works best with a sawing action back and forth rather than a chop with force.  So remember saw and let the knife do the work.  The second thing is to use a really good knife.  In good I mean sharp.  This thing was about $10, even though it’s shaped like a cleaver you can tell that it’s not because the blade is thin, so it’s going to slice like a razor.

Ok let’s get rid of the ends and there you have the sliced carrots like you would use in stir frys.

Now to julienne them we are going to spread this out a bit and this time we are still going to do a small sawing action but there is a bit more force and chop to it.

The trickiest part to this cut is that the ingredients are not even.  You may find that the layers of carrot slip when chopping.  To combat this slice the carrot really thin at the start it makes it that much easier.  Also using the back of the blade will give you a bit more force and control.

It does take a little bit of practice, but the more you do the better you will get at it.
