Three Summers 2017 – Movie Review – Must watch for all Australia!

I don’t like to reveal too much with my movie reviews, going in to a movie blind is so much more fun, I mean you are going to watch the whole movie anyway so why watch bits of it beforehand. This movie is a MUST WATCH for all of Australia, whether you are living here or visiting, you will get a bit of a kick out of it. Fine Australian comedy, good characters and all with a social/political edge to bring up conversation.

You are definitely UNAUSTRALIAN if you don’t watch this movie!

It’s unaustralian if you don’t watch this movie!

That’s my review for the movie, Three Summers directed by Ben Elton.

I walked in the cinema not knowing anything about this movie except that it was directed by Ben Elton, so I was thinking that it was going to be a British comedy and hoping that it would be quite clever and funny. At first I thought I was in the wrong cinema because Magda Szubanski featured playing a quaint ol character being all serious, or was it that she was playing a serious character being all funny!

And for me it’s all about the characters, which has been a success of other great Australian Comedies, like The Castle and Kenny. Characters that are not afraid to be themselves. Characters that don’t take themselves too seriously and have the ability to develop. The cast features some classy veteran comedians and some bright new actors and actresses.

What I really liked about this movie were the political statements, in particular the idea of Australia being an occupied country. The movie session that I attended was quite full and many of the movie goers were around the baby boomers age bracket, same as a couple of characters in the movie. It was interesting to see some of the audience’s reaction to the political statements and scenes. I mean it wasn’t too out there, I thought it was just interesting for them to hear Australian actors of their generation, saying some of the things that they might not agree with or are contrary to what they grew up with. I believe many were moved by the movie, even if just slightly moved.

The movie gives a whimsical snapshot of Australia, some of the varying cultures and situations. It was really entertaining and hopefully can bring some persuasion into people’s minds. Again I give it a must watch for all Australians and everyone in Australia or even visits Australia, cause this is Australia. So go out and support Australian film arts, and you are definietly Un-Australian if you don’t
